I can't believe I won on my first try!

Saskatoon resident Darshan Patel has officially made history as Saskatchewan’s first LIGHTNING LOTTO jackpot winner! Western Canada’s newest lottery game launched on April 30 and Patel’s historic win was less than a week later, on May 5.

“I usually like to play SPORT SELECT and Instant win games,” he explained. “But I saw this new game and heard people asking about it and wanted to try!”

Patel said he liked that he could find out if he’d won immediately as it printed.

“I said I’d buy a $10 ticket and see what happens,” he laughed. “Then I won instantly!”

LIGHTNING LOTTO’s jackpot grows in real time with each ticket sold. Patel’s May 5 jackpot was a jaw-dropping $139,931.10.

“I saw the amount and jumped out of the store to call my wife!” he laughed. “I’m in a different mind zone right now. I’m a bit nervous – It’s a big amount!”

The Saskatoon winner said he was most excited to share his win with his wife because of their dream to own a home for their new baby.

“This will be great for a downpayment,” he said. “We could also go back home to visit family, but a house is first.”

When asked about how it feels to be Saskatchewan’s first LIGHTNING LOTTO winner, Patel said: “This is great! My first time playing LIGHTNING LOTTO and I’m a winner!”

Patel bought his winning LIGHTNING LOTTO ticket at Circle K Convenience located at 9-1010 Taylor St. E in Saskatoon. He won by matching all five main numbers drawn on the May 5 LIGHTNING LOTTO draw — 2, 8, 23, 27 and 33.
